Tow Away Zone Dept.

A problem that seems to be peculiar to NYC (at least, in the U.S.): how do you deal with diplomats constantly violating parking laws?

Weiner Wants Scofflaw Diplomats to Pay Up - City Room Blog - NYTimes.com

That same study had come back to mind as I'd started reading the article; I imagined if it didn't show up in the piece itself, someone would cite it in the comments.

The mendacious side of me has a solution. Any illegally parked car with diplomatic plates is fair game for someone to double-park in front of and not receive a ticket. That might even things up a bit.

A car w/diplomatic plates is a car that is claimed to be outside of the jurisdiction of the local law. Thus, the owners cannot be compelled to pay for infractions of the law - the car is outside of the purvey of the law, and so there are no infractions.

This, you know.

However, if the car is outside of the jurisdiction of the local/state/national law, then no acts against that car can be considered by the local/state/national law. In order to consider damage/theft/defacement of property, the law must be considered applicable with regard to that property, after all. If it is not, then it cannot be used to protect such property, either.

Make that known in NYC, and wait six weeks.

Because that's how long it'll take for the corollary to penetrate: the same could be said of diplomats, too.
